This elegant Fucine Romane pendant draws inspiration from the rhomboid shapes of Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome. They tell a legendary story, whose roots lie in the mysteries of the Oracle of Delphi and in the majesty of the Renaissance art of Michelangelo, a famous lover of Classicism and one of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance.

The most sacred place for the Romans and the arrival point of the Triumphal Marches was the Umbilicus Caput Mundi, i.e. the Centre of the World, an inverted cone monument made of stone and polychrome marble from which all the distances of the Empire and the known World were calculated.

According to Michelangelo, the ancient Umbilicus located in the Roman Forum was to regain its original social importance, figuratively migrating to the Piazza del Campidoglio, where today the City of Rome and the Capitoline Museums are located.

In designing the Piazza del Campidoglio the Master was inspired by the Omphalos of Delphi, a stone of great religious and cultural value kept in the Temple of Apollo, site of the Oracle for two thousand years. The Omphalos was decorated with rhomboidal motifs, an obvious reference to the skin of the serpent, the omnipresent symbol of the Great Mother Earth. With Michelangelo the geometries of the Omphalos were transformed into parallels and meridians, with a twelve-pointed star in the centre, indicating the constellations. The sophisticated geometry of Michelangelo's rhomboid shapes, portrayed by this precious pair of earrings, creates a link between Earth and Heaven.

The ancient Roman Umbilicus had a cavity underneath, a link between the World of the Living and the Underworld. The good-hearted deceased persons and their parents were asked for benevolence and protection. In Latin, the word Umbilicus translates both navel and umbilical cord; it is the union with Mother Earth, who gives life to beings and welcomes them back into her womb after death. An evocative idea of an Eternal Life, continually moulded into new forms, narrated by this precious jewel.

The Rombi Fucine Romane pendant is a goldsmith's creation of great elegance and splendour, inspired by the art of Michelangelo to evoke the myth of the Centre of the World.

The rhomboidal elements are joined together by a hinge that allows a delicate and light movement, reminiscent of the tinkling of the jewellery of the girls of Ancient Rome.

Fucine Romane is pleased to propose this refined pendant in two versions, each beautifully created and decorated by hand with different handcrafting techniques. The first version is finely hand-engraved with the ancient technique of diamond cuts, resembling a magnificent pavé of diamonds, a triumph of sparkling lights. The second version highlights the contrast between diamond cuts and mirror polishing, a sophisticated and intriguing aesthetic research that bewitches the eye.

Handcrafted and brought to perfection in Rome with respect for Nature and Human Dignity. Made exclusively of pure 24 carat Fairmined Eco Gold and pure 999 Fairmined Silver, sustainable and free of toxic chemicals.

Packaging

The fine wood boxes and wool pouches, which we do not consider as mere wrappings, but as silent guardians of small Works of Art, are evidence of the great beauty of the Human Soul and of the craftsmanship that distinguishes Fucine Romane. The wood comes from forests managed in harmony with Nature and the wool is the gift of lovingly reared flocks.
